About

The crown jewel of Westwood Village

921 Westwood Boulevard

A Landmark Reimagined

Holmby Hall is a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument at the intersection of Westwood Boulevard and Weyburn Avenue — the geographic and spiritual center of Westwood Village. For nearly a century, its clock tower has anchored the skyline of one of Los Angeles' most vibrant neighborhoods.

Today, Holmby Hall is being thoughtfully repositioned to honor its heritage while welcoming a new generation of tenants — from flagship retail and dining concepts to boutique offices and wellness experiences.

The Building

Spanish Colonial Revival

Designed by Gordon B. Kaufmann — the architect behind the Hoover Dam and Greystone Mansion — Holmby Hall is a masterwork of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture with an English-Norman clock tower that architectural historians have called "Gothically capped Classical."

The building comprises five interconnected two- and three-story segments spanning a full block along Westwood Boulevard, from Weyburn Avenue to Le Conte Avenue. The signature clock tower rises approximately 110 feet from the southeast corner, crowned with a hexagonal copper roof and green pinnacle.

The Neighborhood

Westwood Village

Westwood Village was only the second planned suburban shopping district ever built in the United States, preceded only by Country Club Plaza in Kansas City. The Janss Brothers created it as a walkable, architecturally cohesive commercial center to serve the new UCLA campus — and it remains that today.

Directly across from UCLA and its 45,000+ students, faculty, and daily visitors, Holmby Hall sits at the crossroads of one of Los Angeles' most educated, affluent, and foot-traffic-rich neighborhoods. The future Metro D Line station at Westwood/UCLA will bring even greater accessibility to the Village.

Designation

Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument

In 2020, the Los Angeles Cultural Heritage Commission designated Holmby Hall as a Historic-Cultural Monument (CHC-2020-5541-HCM), recognizing the building's architectural significance and its role in the development of Westwood Village. The Library of Congress holds photographs of the building in its permanent collections, and the Huntington Library preserves its original architectural archives.

This designation ensures that the building's historic character will be preserved for generations to come, while qualifying it for preservation incentives that support thoughtful modernization.
